Independent Editorial Platform
Turning Ronin Mom into a focused editorial brand
Ronin Mom began as a framework-free Web Components blog and evolved into a focused editorial platform for families who want to homeschool, simplify home life, live more naturally, and build practical skills. I led the repositioning, visual redesign, front-end implementation, content architecture, and technical SEO.
- Problem
- The original site proved the publishing concept, but its broad sustainability-and-wellness positioning, fragmented content structure, and experimental visual language no longer reflected what Ronin Mom was becoming. The redesign needed to clarify the publication’s purpose, create a more engaging reading experience, and provide a dependable foundation for publishing and organic growth.
- My role
- Web Developer, Designer, Brand & Content Strategist
- Outcome
- The redesign transformed Ronin Mom from an early technical experiment into a cohesive editorial product. The publication now has a clearer reader promise, a recognizable visual identity, a more useful content structure, and a scalable foundation for publishing, search visibility, and future monetization.
Overview
Rebuilt and rebranded Ronin Mom from a framework-free Web Components blog into a modern editorial platform for intentional family living. I created the brand direction, redesigned the homepage, About, Journal, article, and newsletter experiences, and established a reusable publishing system supported by responsive design, technical SEO, structured data, accessibility, and editorial quality standards.
Role & ownership
I own the brand direction, content strategy, information architecture, visual design, front-end implementation, MDX publishing workflow, technical SEO, accessibility, and release-quality review for the publication.
Constraints
- The site needed a clearer reader promise without abandoning its practical, family-centered roots
- Content had to support discovery, long-form reading, and newsletter conversion without feeling sales-driven
- Publishing needed a reusable MDX workflow a solo maintainer could keep consistent
- Search visibility required solid metadata, structured data, and semantic markup without fabricated performance claims
Technical approach
I rebuilt the site in Next.js with TypeScript, Contentlayer/MDX, and CSS Modules as a statically exported editorial platform. Articles use consistent frontmatter for title, description, date, category, tags, and imagery. The publishing layer supports dynamic sitemap generation, Organization and BlogPosting structured data, semantic page structure, accessible navigation, and a content-review workflow before release.
Brand & UX strategy
The new content strategy centers on three connected pillars: Intentional Family Life (homeschooling, family rhythms, parenting, traditions, and realistic everyday experiences); A Simpler, Healthier Home (low-toxin choices, sustainable swaps, home care, organization, and thoughtful consumption); and Practical Self-Sufficiency (cooking, gardening, DIY skills, preparedness, natural living, and learning to do more at home).
Positioning statement: “Ronin Mom shares honest family experiences and practical ways to homeschool, simplify your home, live more naturally, and become more self-sufficient—without chasing perfection.” Tagline: “Raising a capable family. Creating a more intentional home.”
The visual system moves away from generic gradients, emoji-led features, and prominent samurai imagery toward a warm, grounded editorial experience. Natural paper tones, deep forest green, muted clay, warm cream, restrained gold accents, expressive editorial typography, and generous spacing give the publication a distinctive but approachable identity.
The redesign supports scannable article discovery, comfortable long-form reading, clear visual hierarchy, consistent article and category presentation, newsletter conversion without intrusive marketing, and responsive layouts across desktop, tablet, and mobile.

Reflection
Ronin Mom reflects the broader way I approach digital products: combining front-end development with brand positioning, user experience, content strategy, and long-term maintainability. The project required more than building individual pages—it required shaping how the entire publication communicates, grows, and earns reader trust.
